Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin endorsed his Republican colleague Lisa Murkowski for re-election on Sunday, crossing party lines to endorse the incumbent from Alaska, who is facing a rival supported by former President Donald Trump. The conservative West Virginia lawmaker said he has teamed well with Murkowski in the Senate — which is split 50-50 — to build bipartisan support for bills like President Joe Biden's infrastructure plan.
He said she serves Alaska and the upper house well from her position. "It's hypocritical to essentially work with one person day in and day out and then when they're in the election cycle you're supposed to be against them because they have an R or a D next to their name," said Manchin, who was introduced with Murkowski on CNN's "State of the Union" to promote the values of bipartisanship.
“Alaska would be very lucky if she continues to serve them,” he said. Murkowski's main Republican rival is Kelly Tshibaka, who has the support of Trump and Alaska GOP leaders but trails Murkowski in fundraising. Democrats still don't have a contender in the race. The state's last Democratic senator, Mark Begich, failed to win re-election in 2014.
